Closet Countdown

It's a proven fact: no house or apartment ever has enough closet space. So how you organize it can make a significant difference in your ability to look good, find things and keep frustration down. Remember the statistic: we typically wear 20% of our clothes 80% of the time. So 80% of your clothes need to undergo carefully scrutiny as to their current usefulness.

When a closet becomes stuffed and jumbled, you must start by emptying it completely. As you do so, you will inevitably discover things you had completely forgotten or thought were lost. In fact, they were only buried.

Resolve to do the job in one session; it really doesn't take as long as you think. A closet is an integrated whole, you must treat it as a unit.

As you empty it, examine each item and remember what you are looking for is quality over quantity.

Sort as you go and have a box or bag nearby for those things to be given to charity.

Redistribute objects which do not belong to other locations as you find them.

Begin returning things in categories, storing items in see-through containers or in boxes clearly labelled with a large black marker. Frequently used items should be stored on low or middle shelves, items used less often on top or bottom ones. Never hide an item by placing another in front of it.

Hangers all of the same type work best. A jumble of different types ends up being just that - a jumble. Invest in the type of hanger that works best for you and discard all the others.

Some people prefer to arrange clothing by activity, ie: leisure, work, social occasions, others find hanging the same type of clothing together, ie: shirts/blouses, pants/slacks, jackets/suits, dresses, etc., works best for them. Whatever works for you be consistant in how you do it.

Now that you have finished that closet you will actually be able to see what you own and you will find deciding what to wear in the morning will become so much easier.
